About The Artist: David Holtzman
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1952. Art and creative talent and skills began showing in Mr. Holtzmanís early years, as early as Kindergarten(age 5 years). Always fascinated with color and experimentation, Mr. Holtzman always excelled in art from early childhood through college years and beyond to the present. He even had a pastel drawing of horses on display at the Philadelphia Convention Civic Center at the age of 8 years old.
It is said that very often art or creative talents are in oneís genetic background, which in this case, could be his father, Alex Holtzman, born and raised in New York. Mr. Holtzmanís father studied fine art and textile design in Philadelphia, at the Philadelphia College of Art & Textiles, and after World War II ended up in the textile industry. At which time he and his wife, Doris Holtzman, Davidís mother lived permanently in Philadelphia, PA.
Besides David Holtzman enjoying art in the public school art system, year after year, he also attended Saturday morning art classes in Philadelphia. After finishing high school(early age, just turning 17). Mr. Holtzman enrolled in a four year art program at the Hussian School of Art, Inc. in Philadelphia. Focusing mainly on art, color & design, and illustration, along with heavy studies and hours in painting and drawing throughout all 4 years. Graduating #2 in his class, of which was rated by the personal growth of each student. At that time May 1973 David Holtzman was the youngest graduate of the school, and throughout school nicknamed ěGolden Boyî, and by some fellow students, "The Master" due to his talent and age.
Mr. Holtzman had received his first freelance illustration commission a few weeks prior to graduation. Which began a series of illustrations he created for book cover jacket designs, editorial illustration, etc. in numerous national publications. Then continuing his freelance designer/illustrator occupation for numerous publications and advertising in a variety of industries, along with private commissions for large interior murals in public locations, sculpture, drawings and paintings, from 1973 to 1980. Mr. Holtzman was also asked by the school, Hussian School of Art, Inc. to teach part time, freshman classes. These would be color & design courses, which also became a preliminary entrance into illustration.
Mr. Holtzman then relocated to the Southern New Jersey Shores, near by Atlantic City in 1980. Always getting bored, and needing to try different styles and mediums, at that time Mr.Holtzman worked at a local advertising agency, and soon thereafter, started his own design firm agency, up until and including the present. In the late 1980s Mr. Holtzman started dedicating more time in the fine art direction, by creating, numerous portraits and sculpture of a variety of vintage and contemporary movie stars, along with famous people. Again always trying new and different types of images and media, as did Picasso, and other versatile master artists from around the world.
Holtzman has produced a variety of two and three dimensional art/sculpture for over 30 years, specializing in unusual portraits, inclusive of a large amount of movie stars. People such as Lucy Arnez Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, Elvis Presley, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Bros., James Dean, Muhammad Ali, Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson, etc. Famous for a private commission of a unique ěLion Headî, for the President of MGM Studios, in the 70s. Additionally John Wanamakerís of Center City Philadelphia, also sponsored and produced a one man show of David Holtzmanís Fine Art in the 70s. Mr. Holtzman has also received numerous art awards in both Philadelphia, PA and in Southern New Jersey. And is currently on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic City Arts Commission.
In the year 2000, Mr. Holtzman begin producing limited edition museum quality giclee prints of some of his original art images, at edition numbers of 300 or less, in order to avoid any mass production of his art.
