Giclee: (pronounced ZHEE-clay)
"The merger of art and science has created a fine art print, commonly known as a GiclČe, (French for a 'spraying of ink'). The final product is a lush, vibrant, and velvety-textured art print; one that has the feel of a watercolor, and the look of an original lithograph. It brings revolutionary color and flexibility to the limited edition print market. Today's fine art print collectors as well as galleries and museums recognize GiclČe prints by their exquisite color and fine detail.
Limited Edition:
A limited print is a lithograph printed with museum quality inks and paper, signed and numbered by the artist, and limited in number to the size of the edition. The materials used in producing a limited edition print are archival-quality materials. This is done to preserve the life of the print and to prevent discoloration. The paper on which the image is printed is treated so it is pH neutral and is a heavier paper stock than the open edition prints.
Artist Proof:
A consecutively numbered print bearing the pencil-written initials A/P. Artist proofs are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity just like S&N limited-edition prints and canvases. However, unlike their counterparts, artist proofs are smaller signed and numbered editions, therefore they are more rare. As a rule of thumb, an artist may retain 10% of a regular edition size to be used for artist's proofs and even put a premium price on them.
S&N:
An abbreviation meaning SIGNED and NUMBERED. A S&N print is a limited edition print which is signed and numbered by the artist.
Edition - The authorized number of impressions produced. The edition includes all numbered pieces artistís proofs (a.p.) hors de commerce examples (H.C., i.e. outside of usual commerce) and printers proofs (P.P.).
Medium:
The art material that is used in a work of art such as clay, paint or pencil. Describing more then one art medium is referred to as media. Any substance added to color to facilitate application or to achieve a desired effect.
Impressionism:
Impressionism is referred to as the most important art movement of the 19th century. The term impressionism came from a painting by Claude Monet. His painting was titled "Impression Sunrise". Impressionism is about capturing fast fleeting moments with color, light, and surface. The impressionist style of painting is characterized chiefly by concentration on the general impression produced by a scene or object and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.
Acrylic:
Thicker and stronger than tempera or watercolor paint, Acrylic is a water-based "plastic" paint.
Canvas:
Fabrics that are prepared for painting. Available in panels, stretched on frames, or obtained by the yard.
Monotype:
One-of-a-kind print made by painting on a sheet of metal or glass and transferring the still-wet-painting to a sheet of paper by hand or with an etching press. If enough paint remains on the master plate, additional prints can be made, however, the reprint will have substantial variations from the original image. Monotype printing is not a multiple-replica process since each print is unique.
Monoprint:
A print that has the same underlying common image, but different design, color or texture.
Lithograph
This is a printing process. A small stone, or metal plate is used. The printer, usually with the artists supervision covers the plate with a sheet of paper which are then run through the printer.
Gesture Drawing:
This quick drawing captures the energy and movement of the subject. It does not necessarily have to be realistic.
Publisher:
The company which actually prints and distributes the prints to art galleries and art dealers. Also known as a Publishing House.
Realism:
In the arts, the accurate, detailed, unembellished depiction of nature or of contemporary life. Realism rejects imaginative idealization in favour of a close observation of outward appearances.
Representational Art
Art in which recognizable objects, figures, or elements in nature are depicted.Ý
Surrealism:
A 20th-century literary and artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter.
Abstract:
In painting and sculpture, emphasizing a derived essential character having little visual reference to objects in nature.
Cubism:
An early 20th-century school of painting and sculpture in which the subject matter is portrayed by geometric forms without realistic detail, stressing abstract form at the expense of other pictorial elements largely by use of intersecting often transparent cubes and cones.
Exressionism:
Movement in fine arts that emphasized the expression of inner experience rather than solely realistic portrayal, seeking to depict not objective reality but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in the artist.
Figurative Art:
Art in which recognizable figures or objects are portrayed.Ý
